Dear All, Further to Mr Darlting's socially responsible budget I have received a personal phone call from Gordonn Brown. It transpires that it has come to his attention that our policy of keeping restaurant wines at a reasonable price could be leading to binge drinking. He sited an example of a group of 30 something's who had become merry whilst dining in Bleu and when confronted by the 'binge patrol' said that they would not normally binge drink but the price of wines in Bleu had encouraged them to do so. Whilst they had set out to have just one bottle of wine between the four of them, as they often do in restaurants - they felt forced to buy a bottle each! A cabinet meeting was held and it was decided that this group of up standing citizens (it transpired that two were Scottish lawyers) had acted out of character purely because of the irresponsible pricing of wine in Bleu restaurant. 'How is it', I was asked ' that you can be so irresponsible, as to charge upto 200% less than The Ivy (which is a restaurant that Gordonn eats in), for exactly the same wine?' I foolishly tried to justify our policy of wine pricing by asking 'who in their right mind would binge drink on Gevry Chambertin even at £44.95?' 'That is exactly my point', he shouted down the phone 'that's at least £30 cheaper than in any other restaurant, and that saving is encouraging people to binge drink' I literally felt my jaw drop - luckily this was a phone call as had he been able to see me he would have felt I was taking the you know what. He passed the phone to some other Scotsman who explained in no uncertain terms that if I didn't put our wine prices up then the wrath of all things unholy would rain down upon me. So I'm sorry - I've had to increase our wine prices and it's with great sadness that I attach our new list, which comes into effect on Monday 17th March - of course we still have the cheapest restaurant wine in town, but is now costs a wee (this was Gordonn's suggestion) bit more. Kind regards Bob
