Southampton leads the way in arts world

SOUTHAMPTON’S Dolphin Hotel continues to forge ahead in the arts world with the unveiling of its latest exhibition.

Entitled - Kin - mother and son, the exhibition showcases the contrasting works of Southampton Institute fine arts graduate Simon Hayes and his mother Anna Kennett.

It’s the first time the two have staged a joint exhibition and Dolphin Hotel owner Bob Musker said the work in the ‘next step’ gallery was causing a real stir among art enthusiasts in the city and further afield.

"Simon and Anna have totally contrasting styles in terms of materials, inspiration and work in our art gallery and they complement each other perfectly," said Bob.

"Anna draws on her personality and library of memories to create some breathtaking art while Simon uses metal to dramatically illustrate life’s rough and tumble aspects."

Simon’s exhibition is a variety of metal works, all of which in some way look at movement and natural decay. His piece ‘head over heals’ leads you up to the first floor, where his mother takes over, showing a variety of beautifully finished paintings

Due to run for the next three months the exhibition is part of the Dolphin’s programme of art events which also include a weekly Sunday Art Market in Dolphin Lane and individual art in each bedroom.

"We commissioned 70 artists from around the world to produce a unique headboard for each bedroom and our innovation in the arts world is already starting reap dividends with enthusiasts heading to Southampton to see the quality of work we have on offer."

Artists lined-up to display their work in the ‘next step’ gallery this year also include Annette Kuska whose exhibition will open on Monday April 12.
