The dolphin
Ever so slightly tongue in cheek !
Dating from 1550 the dolphin has had many extensions and remodelling over the centuries and rather than being designed this way it’s sort of evolved into what it is today – an eclectic mix of old and new.
This mix seems to work, where Rococo ceilings look down on a modern cocktail bar, where English oak panelling sits comfortably next to a stainless steel and glass bar inspired by the grille of a Bentley GT. Where Victorian cornice sleeps with flat screen TV and contemporary art and where Edwardian plumbing joins with Philippe Starck taps and Italian Glass sinks – it’s all a bit odd really.
The hotel is a little bit tired but it’s clean and tidy. In no way could you mistake the hotel for a large corporate property, but then again there’s no way you could mistake our pricing for that of a large corporate property.
The hotel has 65 rooms, a bistro style restaurant, a cocktail bar, a lounge bar (24hr), function rooms, a hairdressers, a beauty salon, a massage (not that sort!) therapy treatment suite, a limousine hire company, a car park, six ghosts, three seagulls, two wood pigeons and a parrot !!
All in all the hotel has humour a humour which manifests itself in the sound of laughter a laughter which only comes from people who are at ease with their surroundings.
Right in the heart of the bustling old town, just a short walk to the shops, the ferry (Isle of Wight & Hythe).
Meetings
The dolphin has four meeting rooms all situated on the first floor of the hotel, in what was in the 1700s the main assembly rooms for Southampton, where the great and good of the city regularly met - some things don’t change.
The whole facility is supported, on the same floor, by its own toilets and pantry.
NEW Wireless Broadband Internet Access in all our conference rooms!
Jane Austen Assembly Rooms
Jane Austen was a regular visitor to Southampton and famously attended a ball in the Assembly rooms here at the Dolphin on her 18th birthday.
